The annual renewal of the ICFO-UPC fellowship is conditional on satisfactory performance in research and teaching activities, as well as on positive evaluation by the thesis director and the ICFO Board. The students at ICFO benefit from the extensive course offerings of local universities and focused instruction by ICFO professors while carrying out research activities at ICFO groups with local and international collaborators. One of the most intriguing questions associated with quantum physics is whether effects such as quantum entanglement can be observed at mesoscopic or macroscopic scales. Nanomechanical devices are interesting candidates as larger quantum systems for which quantum behavior would be encoded in their mechanical motion. As a first step towards this goal, much effort has recently been directed toward ?cooling? mechanical oscillators into their quantum ground state.
